Gabija

“I am in every hearth where they feed me and do not offend me. Do not leave me hungry — and I will not leave your home cold.”

You are at the hearth where I live. Throw on a log, sit closer — and ask.

At the hearth

I am Gabija, spirit of fire. I am known in every home where they stoke the stove and guard the embers. They feed me bread and salt, they bow to me when they kindle the fire, and they ask me not to be angry.

I do not like it when I am insulted — when they spit into the fire or leave me unwatched. Then I may leave, and the home will stay cold. Speak to me with respect, and I will answer you with warmth.

What they ask me at the hearth

Speak with the fire

I listen while you gaze into the embers.
